National Trust - Powis Castle and Garden

Sightseeing attraction | Welshpool | Wales | United Kingdom

Powis Castle and Garden is an impressive medieval castle located near Welshpool in Powys, Wales. The castle, originally built in the 13th century, served as a fortress and later as the stately home of the Herbert family, the Earls of Powis. Today, it is known for its magnificent formal gardens and richly decorated interiors, managed by the National Trust.

Architecture and Interiors
The castle stands out with its striking red sandstone façade and imposing silhouette, towering over the surrounding landscape. Inside, visitors will find grand rooms adorned with valuable paintings, sculptures, furniture, and tapestries. Of particular note is the collection of treasures from India, presented in the Clive Museum. This collection includes numerous artifacts gathered by Robert Clive and his son Edward Clive, the later Governor of Madras, in the 18th century.

The Gardens
Below the castle lie some of the most beautiful gardens in Great Britain. The terraced gardens, designed in French and Italian styles, feature dramatic terraces, an orangery, a formal Edwardian garden, and a tranquil woodland landscape. The intricately clipped yew hedges, among the oldest and largest in Europe, are a special highlight. The gardens offer a changing display of colors in every season and invite visitors to linger and explore.

Historical Significance
Powis Castle played a significant role in Welsh and British history. Originally built as a fortress, it was extensively remodeled and expanded over the centuries. Largely spared from the destruction of the English Civil War, the castle today provides a rare glimpse into the architecture and lifestyle of past eras. The connection to the Clive family and their colonial past is reflected in the extensive collection of Indian artifacts, which form an important part of the exhibition.

Current Use
Today, Powis Castle and Garden is one of the main attractions in Wales, drawing numerous visitors each year. In addition to touring the castle and gardens, guided tours, exhibitions, and events are regularly offered, providing insights into history, architecture, and garden art. Special programs and activities for families make the visit a memorable experience for all ages.

A visit to Powis Castle and Garden offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history and culture of Wales and experience the beauty of one of the country's most impressive castle complexes.

Too expensive for what you actually get to see.🫰 Can't take pictures inside? Why? What you can see is absolute opulence. Dutch east India trading company and slavery comes to mind.

Disappointed the high winds meant house and gardens shut because of the storm. But still enjoyed walking around the perimeter wall, looking down the most amazing hedge at the gardens below and strolling around the parkland. Can’t wait to come again when open. What a fantastic piece of history

The experience was very disappointing and way too expensive for what it was. Only some of the rooms were open, and they were so poorly lit with hardly any information about the items on display. We were hoping for a great learning experience for our kids, but I had to look up a lot of things online because there simply wasn’t any information on what we were looking at!! To be fair, there were a small handful nice volunteers scattered around who were happy to help with questions as and when we encountered them. The café was extremely cramped and overpriced. The grounds and the gardens were very pretty and it was nice to see peacocks and deer roaming around. Overall: It was a very expensive outing and disappointing for a National Trust Park property. The entrance fees ought to be lowered to factor in that only a few rooms were open. Furthermore, more information on displays are desperately needed and lighting needs to be improved.

We attended this amazing national trust venue on a cold, frosty, beautiful sunny January morning. The grounds were amazing, and the castle is phenomenal. It absolutely blew me away how grand it is! They are currently undertaking major electric works, so only the top floor is currently available for viewing, but it's fantastic. Highly recommend. The cafe is good as you would expect from a national trust property, but there is always a large queue, so just expect a wait.. I feel a coffee van outside may help alleviate some of the backlogs. Either way, it is a fantastic property, and I can't wait to visit again.

Phenomenal experience. The gardens were meticulously landscaped and enchanting—it was like stepping into a novel. The castle was great, with tapestries, paintings and old relics to keep you engaged throughout. Lovely day out for a bit of escapism and immersion in nature.

Went to see the Xmas decs for 'twixmas' - the work that has gone into these is incredible. The visitor route is limited as the ground floor is closed for rewiring, so you go in by the usual exit and climb the servants stair. A 30 foot ladder of hand crafted mice are going up the stairwell to a balloon, (so much detail), and their are sounds of a servants party coming from the kitchen. The displays in the rooms are themed round 'a Christmas carol', with clever lighting and sound effects - the more you look the more you see. Also several extravagant decorated trees. ( The person complaining about no decorations must have had their eyes shut!). Go round twice and then take a walk in the garden. You have until Jan 5.

Lovely Christmas Dec's, they are doing work in the castle, so it's only partly open. One of my favourite national trusts x

Disappointing, as they are having a wire, therefore the dining room wasn't available, which is a focal point at Christmas. The dinning furniture was in a bedroom, such a mash up! Not dressed for Christmas as much as advertised, and the 'Victorian' brass light fitting in a drawing room hasn't been dusted since it went up, thick in dust. It only took an hour to go round the castle. The cafe was good, and the castle itself from the outside is impressive.

Absolutely stunning castle & gardens. I've really struggled to limit how the photos to share as I took tonnes! A decent walk from the car park but well worthwhile for the views. The tea room is across the courtyard from the castle & on a nice day you can sit outside & have tea with the peacocks! The gardens are on multiple levels which would be difficult for disabled access

We visited today to see the Xmas lights. What a total disappointment, the garden's were not lit up, it was just the court yard, dire! No big xmas tree, just some illuminated display over part of the house, and just some festoon lights walking up to the castle! The reason they don't do the garden's anymore is due to health and safety, what a load of rubbish! £16.50 with gift aid is a rip off! Going into the house we went up, what looked like was the servants entrance, a few Xmas trees doesn't cut it! Is there a anybody who work's there that has any imagination?!! Even the shop was souless, where was all the xmas gifts and decorations, a few here and there, as if they couldn't be bothered!! Won't be going next year, Chatsworth house way better!!

A great place to visit, the 1/4 part of the building we were allowed to see was brilliant, but felt there was so much more of the building to discover which is not open to the public, which is a shame, even seeing empty un decorated rooms still give one a feel to the places history. The grounds looked amazing but didn't get the chance to explore due to bad weather.

Hugely disappointing and very poor value for money. So few rooms were open and they were very dark with virtually no information about anything. The decorations were pleasant enough but all the trees were fake and the decorations were all the same. You have to vacate the house by 4pm, but to kill time until the illuminations come on at 4.30pm, you can't go round the gardens (they are closed) or in the cafe which isn't serving. What an absolutely ludicrous system! What are you supposed to do, hang around outside in the cold? The National Trust wants to raise more funds but they are missing a big opportunity not letting people go in the cafe to spend their money whilst waiting for the illuminations. I won't be returning.

Badly organised. We couldn't understand why the cafe will not serve you between 3.30pm and 4.30pm when they have a light show starting at 4.30pm! Also rooms are very dark so you cannot see a lot.

A beautiful place, but overall a disappointment due to poorly organised festive events that aren’t well promoted. Travelled over two hours for the Charles Dickens event, only to find that a small portion of the castle was open and none of the usual information on display. I couldn’t recall anything about the history of the place from our visit. Based on trips to other National Trust properties we were expecting more than fake Christmas trees and big bows. It took us 30 minutes to walk around the open part of the castle. Visitors are told to wait in their cars while they set up to light the exterior of the castle and come back an hour later to see it. It wasn’t worth the wait.

A trip to Powis is always worth it. The castle and grounds are so beautiful. Its even more special at Christmas time with the decorated trees and themed rooms. The light show at 1630 around Christmas is also really special. The gardens are immaculate even in December they are maintained perfectly. Lovely for a day out!

Bought the tickets for inside, a little expensive for what it is. There were Christmas decorations but not a lot of rooms open to see. The garden is in good care you have views from the town. I recommend to go if you are passing by but not to pay to go inside
